WBAMC Staff explore the new facility

FORT BLISS, Texas – William Beaumont Army Medical Center continues to conduct transition activities for the replacement hospital amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the months of December 2020 and January 2021, many staff and employees did orientation sessions, which allowed them to visit their new work area in the new hospital facility. The sessions allowed staff members to familiarize themselves with areas of the hospital and also ask questions regarding their lanes of responsibility.

“We want the employees to walk away with a general sense of where the major areas of the new hospital are located. We also want them to leave excited about the new capabilities what the new hospital offers. We want them to see how the new facility will make patient care and our workflow easier and result in a better experience for both the patients and the staff,” said Sgt. 1st Class Christian Rohde, noncommissioned officer in charge of the Education Division, WBAMC.

Helen Babino, a medical support assistant in the Maternal Child Health Services department at WBAMC, said the orientations helped her gain insight into where everything was located.

“I enjoyed the orientation so I could see how the new hospital came together,” said Babino. “It let me see where my work area is in relationship to the rest of the hospital. The new hospital layout is beautiful and if you are a walker, you will enjoy the steps.”

Patient orientation sessions are being planned for beneficiaries wishing to orientate themselves after the move-in happens, but as the common saying goes with staff in the hospital, “COVID gets a vote.”

“We don’t know where we will be with the pandemic after we transition, but we want to make sure that we first and foremost keep our patients and staff safe,” said Michael S. Oshiki, hospital commander. “We are living through a pandemic and my staff and I are ensuring we move as efficiently and safely as possible into our new facility. We share the excitement about the move along with our patients, and so far all of our teams have been doing a great job. As of today, we are on track to move in on our target date.”

The new facility will continue to provide superior access to care while bringing enhanced services to TRICARE beneficiaries. Soldiers and families stationed at Fort Bliss will continue to receive high-quality, customer-focused care throughout the transition to the new medical center. The patient move is expected to be in the last week of March 2021.
