FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq – "It's a great day for the people of this village," said Mohammed al Rubeiy, district council chief for the Karadah District in Baghdad as Iraqi citizens gathered in Karadah to celebrate their new micropower generator Oct. 17, 2008.
Soldiers of 5th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Multi-National Division – Baghdad, led the way in making the day possible as they coordinated with the district council, which is the voice of the people, in assessing who needs power the most. The generator will provide power to approximately 300 homes.
"Power comes second only to safety in these parts, and this area has seen increased security and stability in recent months," said Maj. Robert Machen, the executive officer for 5th Bn., 25th FA Regt., a College Station, Texas, native.
Construction on the project began mid-summer, and the generator provides constant electrical power to the muhallas.
Besides providing constant power for local homes, a generator of this size will also boost the local economy by providing local jobs and the possibility of attracting small businesses said Rubeiy.
A 10-man team will provide maintenance for the generator, which will provide employment to 30 people during the construction phase.
Micropower generator projects will continue to pop up all around Baghdad. This is due in part to the recent decline in violence against civilians and coalition forces. Continued Iraqi security forces presence has proven effective in "keeping criminals from operating in our villages," said a resident at the opening.
"5-25 Soldiers will continue to serve the people of the Karadah District, ensuring their safe return to normalcy," said Machen. "Many great days are in store for citizens in the Karadah district. This is history, and we are part of it."
"It makes me proud to know that my Soldiers, along with the ISF, have had the privilege to bring peace to this area of Baghdad."
