    1st Theater Sustainment Command

Fort Bragg, N.C. - U.S. Army Central hosted a ceremony to recognize Soldiers, Families and civilian volunteers at an annual volunteer award ceremony at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., April 6, 2017. The 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) co-located at Fort Bragg and Fort Knox participated via live teleconference, along with other USARCENT units.

USARCENT commander, Lt. Gen. Michael X. Garrett recognized and praised the efforts and contributions of both Soldier and civilian volunteers at the ceremony. Garrett expressed his gratitude to them for making their local communities and organizations better.

"Thank you for what you do to support our units, our families and make life better for all of us. They help us accomplish the things we couldn't do without them," said Garrett.

Kathryn Ayvazian and Melanie Beasley, both 1st TSC spouses, were recognized for their volunteerism and contributions to the unit.

Both ladies volunteered hundreds of hours to support spouses of deployed Soldiers, welcome new Soldiers to the unit, assisted in planning committees for unit events and actively participated in the unit's Family Readiness Group.

The Army's FRG program provides a support system for Army Families and helps keep them connected to their unit and their servicemembers.

Ayvazian said that volunteering and supporting the unit and families was a fulfilling experience for her.

"I enjoy helping and knowing I'm making a difference," said Ayvazian.

Beasley who was recognized as USARCENT's volunteer of the year said she also enjoyed volunteering and getting to know her Army Family.

"It feels good and it feels right. If you have the time, it's totally worth it," she said.

Spc. Jeremiah Brown, a chaplain assistant with the 1st TSC said that Beasley's barracks welcoming program helped Soldiers feel at home.

"It helped new and redeploying Soldiers have a smooth transition into the unit and really feel welcome," he said.

The ceremony also recognized deployed servicemembers volunteering their time to help fellow servicemembers and the local community in Kuwait and Qatar.
