EL PASO, Texas – The 647th Regional Support Group, received a visit from Brig. Gen. Alex B. Fink, the commanding general of the 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), U.S. Army Reserve., Feb. 12, 2017, at the Armed Forces Reserve Training Center.

Fink, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, has been visiting 4th ESC units, expressing the importance of mission readiness for U.S. Army Reservists.

“I always like to provide context around why we are so focused on readiness in the Army,” said Fink. “It’s not just because we are interested in great statistics. There’s a real reason we are doing this and it’s because of the threat. We have an Army because of the threat.”

Fink further explained how the current threat creates a requirement for our Army Reserve Soldiers to be ready to “fight tonight.” He stressed the importance of all U.S. Army Reserve being ready to fight in 30 days or less.

Soldiers were given an opportunity to sit with Fink during a lunch break at a local eatery. Army Capt. Shaka Malufau, military policeman, 647th RSG, sat with the Soldiers and Fink during the lunch break and agreed with Fink’s comments on the U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers being ready to fight.

“Today is more dangerous, more volatile and more unpredictable than he’s ever seen it from a military standpoint,” said Malufau. “The Army Reserve Soldier has to be ready in order to effectively fight.”

Malufau felt that the 647th RSG Soldiers were doing an outstanding job and felt honored and privileged to be with the unit and work with outstanding Soldiers.

Although Fink’s visit was short, he closed his visit by reminding Soldiers that they can’t underestimate what value they bring to the force. It is critically important that Soldiers are always ready to deploy and fight because that is what may be required of them in the future.

“If we are late to the fight, we are irrelevant,” said Fink.

The 4th ESC functions as an operational command post for a theater sustainment command, providing operational-level sustainment support and controls logistics within an assigned area of operations.
