BANGOR, Wash. – Single sailors aboard Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) will be “moving on up” and into their newly refreshed Unaccompanied Housing (UH) quarters later this month.

A ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 1 marked the first completed upgrade of a two-barrack modernization plan at NBK-Bangor.

The project includes renovations at buildings 2306 and 2308, which include added kitchen and laundry facilities, and closets. Other systems upgraded included security, heating, ventilation and cooling systems, and hot water.

“We want to ensure our sailors live in the highest quality barracks,” said Inkwon Hwang, NBK Unaccompanied Housing facilities manager. “They should feel more comfortable knowing they have a nice home to go to after a hard day’s work.”

The new UH amenities are the same class one would find in private off-base apartments and condominiums, according to Cmdr. Michael Leonard, Naval Facilities and Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest, Public Works Officer at NBK.

"The living quarters were designed and constructed for market style," he said. “They also align with the latest Chief of Naval Operations unaccompanied housing standards.”

The renovations will also be more cost- and energy-efficient, and easier to maintain, Hwang said. Building 2306 was completed June 27 and the upgrades on 2308 are scheduled to begin this month.

Capt. Tom Zwolfer, NBK Commanding Officer, said executing the project wouldn’t be possible without the teamwork of NAVFAC and the contractor teams.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved with this project for their hard work,” he said. “The NAVFAC Project Team is doing a fantastic job ensuring this project is completed to standard and in compliance with contractual guidelines.”
