U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District

The District's Emergency Command and Control Vehicle, operated by Alex Watt, made its return appearance and was led by the Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Dennis Sugrue, district volunteers and their families. Sugrue and the volunteers carried the District's banner, followed by Bobber the Water Safety Dog, with the ECCV in trail along the two mile parade route.

"This is a great opportunity for our District’s staff and family to meet and mingle with the people in this supportive community," said Sugrue. “I thank those volunteers from our District who came out and supported our District’s contribution to the parade.”

The City of Torrance is one of few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor the Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day Parade and Celebration, with an estimated 60,000 spectators according to the city's website.

More than 50 units participated in the parade, including military color guards and marching bands, high school marching bands and drill teams, uniformed troops and military drill teams, units from the National Guard, ROTC and military reserve. The parade also included vintage aircraft flyovers and military vehicles such as tanks, armored personnel carriers and flyovers of military helicopters.

"This is my first year participating in the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade and I truly enjoyed myself,” said Delfina Fallin, an office engineer technician with the District’s Fort Irwin Resident Engineer Office. “I'm a retired Army construction surveyor and love to be involved in community service, and I strongly believe that there's nothing greater than to be a positive representation of your organization.”

The three-day celebration included festivities at the city’s Del Amo Mall, where visitors viewed and toured a host of static military displays, including tanks and helicopters from the National Training Center and Fort Irwin, and personnel and equipment from other branches of the Armed Forces.

Bobber the Water Safety Dog greeted children along the parade route, posed for photos and delivered his message to be safe in and around water and to follow his water safety rules: learn to swim well; don’t swim in water over your head; always have an adult with you; and wear a life jacket.

Gen. Robert B. Abrams, commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, was the grand marshal.
