CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo - U.S. Army Soldiers deployed to Kosovo delivered backpacks filled with school supplies to local schools in Tugjec and Devaja, Kosovo, as part of a three-month community outreach initiative.
Community members from West Virginia, the home state of Col. Christopher Selvey, the deputy commander for the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team and Multinational Battle Group-East, started “Three P’s for Peace”—formally called the pens, pencils and paper program—in 2004 to help schools and students with limited resources during Selvey’s previous deployment to Iraq.
One of Selvey’s fellow community members in particular, retired teacher Cathy Arritt of Fayetteville, W.Va., was instrumental in shipping the school supplies overseas. MNBG-E Soldiers volunteered to pack the supplies and deliver them to the kids at various schools throughout Kosovo.
Kosovo Force, or KFOR, is the name of the multinational NATO peace support mission that MNBG-E is part of. In coordination with Kosovo’s institutions and law enforcement organizations, KFOR works to ensure safety, security and freedom of movement in the region.
“Community outreach projects is one of the best things we get to do as far as supporting the kids,” said Capt. Joshua Goforth, a West Virginia National Guard Soldier who leads one of KFOR’s Liaison Monitoring Teams in southern Kosovo. These teams spend the majority of their time building and maintaining relationships with local community members.
Goforth said that seeing the local kids’ and teachers’ instant appreciation means a lot to him and the Soldiers on his team
