    Story by Sgt. Christopher Dennis

1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division

Walking through the glass and silver doors to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team’s dinning facility Nov. 18, you hear the lively rhythms of roaring ‘20s, setting the mood for the Soldiers entering on Thanksgiving Day here.

Black and gold signs decorate the dining area with patterns that harken back to a bygone era of fast cars, parties and excessive galore.

One of the signs reads, “A little party never hurt nobody.” This is a line from “The Great Gatsby,” and the theme for this year’s III Corps Commanding General’s Best Thanksgiving Day Dining Facility Competition at the Black Jack Inn Dining Facility.

This theme was not only be just posters, cornucopia, and theme cakes, but also two sculptures made out of 1,800 pounds of ice - a bowl, and a staircase from the film.

Food service specialists made two cakes in the Gatsby theme - a car from the 1920’s era, and a gingerbread house.

Soldiers from the Black Jack DFAC also cooked a stuffed beef loin, featured in the movie, to completely integrate the theme into the menu.

The competition involved nine dining facilities Nov. 25.

The Black Jack Inn Dining Facility is one of the largest on Fort Hood, which is what inspired the theme for this year from two of its Soldiers.

“When I think of our DFAC, I think of the fact that it’s the biggest one, so why not have a big theme,” said Spc. Laneese Leger, a food service specialist with Troop D, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

Leger and Pfc. Erica Robertson, a food service specialist with Company F, 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st ABCT, are credited with having the inspiration of the theme.

    The celebration didn’t happen overnight.

The planning for this year’s Thanksgiving celebration started in mid-September, while the Ironhorse team was still at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California, said Sgt. 1st Class Brandon Myles, Black Jack Inn Dining Facility manager.

The dining facility belongs to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team “Black Jack,” 1st Cav. Div., but while the brigade is deployed to Korea on a nine-month rotation, it is being operated by Soldiers of the 1st ABCT.

Myles and his team fed an estimated 1,500 people for Thanksgiving, ensuring that the last Soldier through the line was fed as well as the first, and that Soldiers experienced a good holiday, though they might be away from family.
