NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District lauded the project officer who managed the team that recently completed a site readiness construction project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and coordinated with federal partners at the U.S. Department of Energy.
Lt. Col. John L. Hudson presented Maj. Timothy E. Nix with the Meritorious Service Medal on behalf of Brig. Gen. Richard G. Kaiser, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Ohio River Division in Cincinnati. The award singled out Nix for his major contributions during his assignment with the Nashville District that supported the construction of a new bridge and mile of roadway for the Bear Creek Road extension, and relocation of several potable water lines at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The $19.5 million site preparation work is the first sub project for the $6.5 billion project to construct the new Uranium Processing Facility at Y-12. The Corps began construction in June 2013 and culminated its work in January 2015.
“During his time here in the Nashville District, he’s been a big part of the team out there at Oak Ridge, both as a project engineer and as a project manager forward – helping with the execution at Bear Creek Road and working closely with our customer,” Hudson said. “We really appreciate your tremendous work in representing the district ... and doing an exceptional job.”
The medal citation noted the major’s contribution to the completion of work at Oak Ridge both on time and under budget, and highlighted Nix’s vision, leadership and dedication that led to the success of the interagency construction project.
“I appreciate the trust and the confidence you put (in me) allowing me to work autonomously under your guidance,” Nix said to Hudson after the award presentation.
Nix said the assignment with the Nashville District was both challenging and rewarding because he learned a lot about the Corps of Engineers and how it functions.
“Hopefully I can meet the Army’s intent of taking that experience onto later in my career,” Nix said.
Nix also thanked Tommy Long, the project’s resident engineer; Reserve Sgt. Maj. Joe Duncan, construction assurance and quality control representative; the contractor, Avisco Inc.; and the entire Corps of Engineers team that worked both on site and at the headquarters on the project and helped him as he became the interface with the customer and worked to meet their expectations.
“Tommy – thank you. You have taught me a whole lot. This was a wonderful assignment for the learning experiences and professional development,” Nix said. “Tommy took every opportunity to explain things or point things out or lead me in the proper direction to make sure I was on course.”
Long reciprocated and said Nix did a lot to build a great working relationship between the Corps and DOE as the project progressed and came to fruition.
“When the major came in it was a breath of fresh air ... he just knew how to talk the lingo,” Long said. “He did a great job overall and had tremendous respect from all of the staff and the customer.”
Hudson presented Nix a ukulele as a symbol of his time working with the Nashville District in Music City as the major is being reassigned to the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
“You can sing the praises of Nashville District and your experience here,” Hudson said. “You can display that proudly at your next duty station.”
