FORD ISLAND, Hawaii – U.S. Navy Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Electrical) 1st Class Jessica Drake, a chief petty officer selectee assigned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, places an American flag on a memorial boot during the Boot Memorial Run at Ford Island, Hawaii. Nearly 9,000 memorial boots line the route across Ford Island, each representing a service member who died in service to the nation. Founded in 2012 by military spouse Theresa Johnson, the Boot Memorial has grown into an annual remembrance event honoring fallen service members and preserving their legacies.
