U.S. Navy Capt. Russell Caldwell, commander of Naval Surface Group Southwest (CNSGSW), left, presents the 8010 championship belt in the middle weight category to U.S. Navy Lt. Charlotte Meyer, chief engineer assigned to Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97), during a visit to the ship at BAE Shipyard, Sep. 1, 2026. Meyer accepted the award on behalf of Halsey’s crew, which was recognized as one of the top-performing ships in Fire Fighting Compliance and Validation Exercises in accordance with NAVSEA 8010 Industrial Ship Safety Manual for Fire Prevention and Response. Halsey was named the middle weight winner, a distinction awarded to Cruiser-Destroyer units, while San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay (LPD 20), claimed victory as the heavy weight champion, an honor reserved for Amphibious surface assets. 8010 evaluators from Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) and CNSGSW assess critical performance metrics including manning of fire teams, timely application of extinguishing agent, establishment of fire boundaries, integration with pier-side and shore-based firefighting assets, and overall damage control readiness in a simulated industrial environment. CNSP ensures fleet commanders are provided with personnel, materiel and training required to project credible naval power at sea, ashore, at home and abroad.
