FREDERICK, Md. (Aug. 10, 2026) Shirley Nimo-Paintsil and Rania Nada, scientists with Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) EURAFCENT, perform a test to identify bacteria during a training at Naval Medical Research Command’s (NMRC) Biological Defense Research Directorate. NMRC provides training across the Fleet in the use of advanced, field-forward genomic sequencing capabilities, enabling rapid identification of pathogens to protect against infectious disease threats and enhance warfighter readiness. NAMRU EURAFCENT, part of Navy Medicine Research & Development, conducts research, surveillance and studies of vaccines, therapeutic agents, diagnostic assays and vector control measures in the EUCOM, AFRICOM and CENTCOM Areas of Responsibility to better prevent and treat infectious diseases in support of Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health, readiness and lethality.
