    U.S. Army Lt. Col. Susan Hughes and Lt. Col. Edward Pitts Jr. are promoted to the rank of colonel during a ceremony hosted by the South Carolina National Guard in Columbia, South Carolina, Sept. 1, 2026. Hughes serves as commander of the 59th Troop Command and director of human resources for the South Carolina National Guard, overseeing manpower and personnel programs for Active Guard Reserve Soldiers, dual-status technicians and Title 5 civilian employees across Army and Air components. Pitts serves as commander of the South Carolina Army National Guard Medical Detachment, leading Soldiers specialized in force health protection and medical readiness to support unit operations, training, and mobilization.
