260820-N-N1526-1002 (Aug. 20, 2026) FALLS CHURCH, Va. A scanned letter documents the commission and appointment for Dr. Alexander G. Lyle, U.S. Navy Dental Corps, to the rank of Lt. j.g. and position as acting assistant dental surgeon by the Secretary of Navy in Washington, D.C. on April 21, 1915. Lyle was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1919 for extraordinary heroism in the lifesaving efforts of Marine Cpl. Thomas Regan during an explosion. In 1943, Lyle became the first flag officer in the history of the Dental Corps. The original letter is part of the Dental Corps Historical Exhibit Collection housed at the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery archives in Falls Church, Virginia. (U.S. Navy courtesy photo)
