260820-N-N1526-1001 (Aug. 20, 2026) FALLS CHURCH, Va. Scan of a letter conferring Medal of Honor and citation for Lt. Cmdr. (Dr.) Alexander Lyle, U.S. Navy Dental Corps, from the Bureau of Navigation in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 23, 1920. Lyle, a dentist assigned to the 5th Marine Regiment, was deployed to the French Front during World War I when the unit came under heavy shellfire. When Marine Cpl. Thomas Regan was wounded in an explosion on April 23, 1918, Lyle risked his own life to administer lifesaving first aid. For his actions of extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on Feb. 4, 1919. The notification letter, along with the medal, was received while Lyle was serving aboard dreadnought battleship USS Tennessee (BB 43) at the New York Navy Yard on Nov. 11, 1920. In 1943, Lyle became the first flag officer in the history of the Dental Corps. The original letter is part of the Dental Corps Historical Exhibit Collection housed at the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery archives in Falls Church, Virginia. (U.S. Navy courtesy photo)
