Mr. Abel Ortega Jr., author and son of Pvt. Abel Ortega Sr., speaks during a ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day on the flight deck aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), Aug. 15, 2026. A 48-star flag made in Japan was raised to honor the Bataan Death March and Prisoner of War survivors.
