Mr. Abel Ortega Jr., author and son of Pvt. Abel Ortega Sr., speaks during a ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day on the flight deck aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), Aug. 15, 2026. A 48-star flag made in Japan by American POWs was raised to honor the Bataan Death March and Prisoner of War survivors during the ceremony. Bataan is currently undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance in the General Dynamics National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) shipyard in Norfolk, Virginia.
