Marines from the Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. (8th and I) and the Marine Band, “The President’s Own” and soldiers the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) Caisson Detachment conduct full military funeral honors with escort for U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. William Keys in Section 78 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, July 20, 2026. Keys’ funeral service also included a flyover of three V-22 Osprey aircrafts, a caparison riderless horse, a 15-gun salute from the Presidential Salute Battery and a bagpiper who played “Amazing Grace.”
Keys was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps following his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in June 1960. Designated an infantry officer, Keys served at every level of operational command, from a platoon leader with 3d Battalion 2d Marine Regiment to a Commanding General with the 2d Marine Division during Desert Storm combat operations in Southwest Asia.
Keys retired from the Marine Corps in September 1994 following his final assignment as the Commander of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Atlantic. His military decorations include: the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star with Combat “V”, the Legion of Merit with Combat “V”, the Bronze Star with Combat “V” and the Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
Keys’ daughter, Elizabeth, received the U.S. flag from her father’s funeral service.
