U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to the 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Joint Task Force-Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, weld and secure crow’s feet to a barrier at National Defense Area 1 near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, Aug. 12, 2026. The placement of the crow’s feet marks the initial stage of installing concertina wire along the top of the barrier to further reinforce the existing infrastructure. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
