An undated historical photo, believed to have been taken around 1950, shows Fall River Dam and Fall River Lake near Fall River, Kansas.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, constructed the project to help reduce flood risk in the Verdigris River basin while providing additional benefits including recreation and natural resource management. The embankment project was completed August 12, 1948, and the full conservation pool was filled on June 9, 1949. The project was completed for full flood control operation in April 1949.
