Spur holders instruct “Shave Tails” as they push Humvees during a rigorous physical fitness test that is part of a Spur Ride hosted by 1st Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, July 25. The Spur Ride is a time-honored tradition that dates back to 1776 when new soldiers, known as “Shave Tails” were put through intensive training to learn how to handle their swords and horses in unison. Today, cavalry regiments throughout the Army uphold the traditions with a lengthy event that tests the troopers’ physical and mental strength. (Photo by U.S. Army Sgt.
