Rear Adm. Benjamin R. Nicholson, Commander, Military Sealift Command (MSC), tours the Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary sea base USS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB-4) in Newport News, Va., August 6, 2026, where he walked the spaces, spoke with the crew and met with the ship's leadership.
Hershel "Woody" Williams, a hybrid-crewed vessel operating with both Civil Service Mariners and service members, provides dedicated support for airborne mine countermeasures, expeditionary missions, counter-piracy, maritime security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
MSC directs and supports operations for approximately 140 civilian-crewed ships that replenish Navy ships at sea, conduct specialized missions, preposition combat cargo at sea around the world, perform a variety of support services, and move military equipment and supplies to deployed forces.
