The black sand beaches, visible from the top of Mt. Suribachi, Iwo To, Japan, July 31, 2026. Mt. Suribachi is the island's highest point and was the site of the famous U.S. Marine Corps flag raising on February 23, 1945. The battlefield immersion visit connected Airmen with the history of one of World War II's most significant battles, providing perspective on the sacrifices of those who fought there. The visit's purpose is to foster a deeper understanding of the heritage that continues to influence today's mission across the Indo-Pacific. (U.S. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Julian Batista)
