One of the deadliest battles that happened 109 years ago during World War, began on July 31, 1917, when British, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand forces attacked entrenched Imperial German forces in occupied Belgium nears the town of Ypres.
Since the beginning of the conflict, armies from the Allies (France, Great Britain, and, after April 1917, the United States) and the Central Powers (Imperial Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Turkey) had clashed in brutal battles involving radical new military technologies: machine guns, fast-firing artillery, chemical weapons, submarines, and airplanes. Together, it gave defending forces an enormous tactical advantage and produced a stalemate on the Western Front.
