The soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment of the 1 Mobile Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) do not take their positions lightly. Every day, from the past to the present, every soldier strives to maintain the “Above The Rest” title. Lt. Col Walker, battalion commander of the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, noted to all that every soldier in the battalion should be encouraged to live by these five values:

Always In The Arena
A mantra that’s been valued by every Soldier who has served in this battalion. It means to continue your fight regardless of the results. Whether you perfectly executed a qualification lane or failed your last 12-mile ruck March, you still have more to do; get up, shake it off, and move!

Be Relentless In The Pursuit Of Excellence
Soldiers cannot be ok with just being good enough. "No one wakes up and goes how can I be average today?" said Lt. Col. Walker, claiming that this mindset goes against everything it means to be above the rest. “You have to be relentless. It's inherent in who we are as a battalion.”

Own Your Square
Take ownership of your responsibilities. You don't walk by a problem, you own it, even if it's above you. If you want to be a part of a great organization, you need to walk around as if everything is your problem. “It’s the battalion’s problem and I am a part of the battalion.”

Value Integrity
Great organizations need to have the ability to trust one another. “You don't sacrifice trust or integrity to move further.”

Exercise Initiative
Good organizations reflect the good intentions of their commanders. However, the best organizations allow members to complete the mission with minimal guidance. Exercising that decision to act is what makes great organizations great. “if you see an opportunity to help the unit accomplish the mission, take it. I won’t know everything as the commander, but I trust your judgement to do what is right for the organization.”
