Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy perform hose handling drills alongside Sailors aboard the Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Manchester (LCS 14). Midshipmen learned shipboard damage control principles, and experienced the teamwork required to fight a fire at sea. The evolution is part of the 2026 midshipman summer training program, which immerses future officers in fleet operations to build day-one leadership readiness and showcase the surface warfare mission. Littoral combat ships are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats.
