Brian Carter, civil engineering technician, Canton Lake, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, operates a skid steer to remove sediment from a dewatered stilling basin at Canton Dam in Canton, Oklahoma, July 8, 2026.
Crews removed the accumulated sediment to provide engineers with safe access to inspect the concrete structure for signs of wear, deterioration and other deficiencies. The inspection is part of the Tulsa District’s Dam Safety Program, which seeks to ensure USACE-owned and operated dams do not present unacceptable risks to people, property or the environment, with an emphasis on public safety.
