    Operation Ardent Vanguard

U.S. Soldiers with the 62nd Engineer Battalion, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, observe terrain conditions alongside civilian contractors clearing vegetation and emplacing a southern barrier near Fort Hancock, Texas, July 8, 2026. The contractors are responsible for making sure that the terrain is viable and free of obstructions so the barriers may be placed effectively. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
