A person wearing blue nitrile gloves and a tan/olive shirt is performing laboratory work at a portable field workstation, using a micropipette to load samples into what appears to be a portable PCR or diagnostic device. The setting appears to be a temporary field laboratory environment, indicated by the white tent/tarp backdrop and orange flexible ducting. A Forward Deployable Preventive Medicine Unit (FDPMU) microbiologist loads the field sequencer at an event during Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) in Oahu, Hawaii, July 12, 2024. U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) personnel then conducted training on sequencing during RIMPAC using Far-Forward Advanced Sequencing Technology (F-FAST) methods and were able to observe the technology’s integration in the FDPMU tent laboratory. The effort brings sophisticated laboratory capability into austere environments, giving forward-deployed units the ability to detect and identify harmful pathogens in less than 30 minutes.
