U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Research Biologist Sophie Colston, Ph.D. and Lt. Cmdr. Chaselynn Watters of the Biological Defense Research Directorate (BDRD) Mobile laboratory team operate the sequencer during a training event at BDRD, Jan. 21, 2022. BDRD was the primary transition partner for the Far-Forward Advanced Sequencing Technology (F-FAST). NRL trained BDRD personnel who then conducted advanced testing in the field. The effort brings sophisticated laboratory capability into austere environments, giving forward-deployed units the ability to detect and identify harmful pathogens in less than 30 minutes.
