U.S. service members, distinguished guests and local representatives honor the courage and sacrifice of 19 men from Bedford, Virginia, during a D-Day commemoration ceremony on Omaha Beach in Vierville-sur-Mer, France, June 6, 2026. The ceremony was a tribute to the “Bedford Boys” whose loss was considered the highest per-capita devastation to any town in the U.S. during Operation Overlord. More than 600 present day U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Guardians and Airmen from roughly 17 units historically linked to D-Day supported Joint Task Force 82 and participated in over 90 commemorative events throughout the Normandy Region.
