U.S. Army Lt. Col. Julie Shelley, outgoing commander of the 372nd Military Police Battalion, relinquished command to incoming commander Lt. Col. Andrew Garwitz during a change of command ceremony at the D.C. Armory, on May 31, 2026. The ceremony was officiated by Col. Lawrence Doane, commander of the 260th Special Purpose Brigade and Joint Task Force–District of Columbia. Lt. Col. Shelley’s military career began in 1986 and includes more than nine years of enlisted service in the U.S. Army Reserve and Arizona National Guard. Her career has also included serving as the Deputy Chief, SIG (G-3/5/7), for the Army National Guard, and as the Joint Staff CAG Strategic Planner/Executive Officer for the Chief of the National Guard Bureau (NGB).

Trained as both Soldiers and police officers, the 372nd Military Police Battalion plays a crucial role in conducting traffic control, corrections, security, and mobility support operations, particularly during National Special Security Events (NSSEs). The battalion traces its lineage to the 1st Separate Regiment, which was mustered into federal service and redesignated as the 372nd Infantry Regiment in 1917. During World War I, the regiment was attached to the French Army’s 157th “Red Hand” Division and fought in the Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine, and Alsace campaigns. For its distinguished service, the unit was awarded the Croix de Guerre, one of France’s highest military honors. The regiment was also bestowed the “Red Hand” designation, a legacy that the 372nd Military Police Battalion proudly carries today. (U.S. Air National Guard photo by Master Sgt. Arthur M. Wright)
