An MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 60 (HSM-60) takes off from the flight deck aboard the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Cooperstown (LCS 23) to conduct maritime surveillance operations while the ship transits the Gulf of America, May 30, 2026. Deploying aviation assets from littoral combat ships enhances the task force's capability to monitor maritime transit corridors and detect illicit activities. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
