Description: Wyss Institute Biospleen. Caption: This prototype device, developed by the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, cleanses blood by injecting magnetic nanoparticles that bind to a wide variety of bacteria, fungi, and endotoxins into an infected individual’s blood. As the blood is circulated through the biospleen’s magnetic bed, magnets pull out the nanoparticles bound to the microorganisms and the purified blood flows back into the individual. This biospleen prototype has been tested in rats. Subsequent developments have removed the magnetic component but have retained the broad spectrum filtration concept.
