Rct. Chelsea Velasquez, Platoon 4025, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, fires her weapon from the kneeling position June 26, 2013, on a rifle range on Parris Island, S.C. Velasquez, 20, from Riverbank, Calif., shot approximately 480 rounds from the M16 rifle during her week on the range. Rifle qualification is one of eight graduation requirements recruits must fulfill to become U.S. Marines. Papa Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
