The sun rises over Lake Okeechobee’s Coots Bay and its surrounding wetlands. This 451,000-acre lake is the centerpiece of a 154-mile-long waterway that extends from the Atlantic Ocean at Stuart to the Gulf of Mexico at Fort Myers. The waterway runs directly through Lake Okeechobee, consisting of the Caloosahatchee River to the west and the St. Lucie Canal to the east. (US Army photo by Brigida I. Sanchez)
