SAN DIEGO (March 31, 2026) A researcher with Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) applies a finger-prick to a recruit from Delta Company (7-26) at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Nearly all recruits start training with suboptimal vitamin D levels. A second sample was collected shortly before recruits graduated from boot camp. This study is an on-going effort to reduce the number of service members with vitamin D deficiencies, across all branches of service. NHRC, part of Navy Medicine Research & Development, supports Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter health readiness and lethality with research and development that delivers high-value, high-impact solutions to the health and readiness challenges U.S. military population faces on the battlefield, at-sea, home and abroad.
