Cartwright serves as chief staff officer for U.S. Navy Music. Previous tours include serving as the executive officer of U.S. Navy Band, director of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band, director of Fleet Band Activities, fleet bandmaster of the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, director of Navy Band Mid-South and assistant director of U.S. Fleet Forces Band. Cartwright enlisted in the Navy in 1998 as an oboe instrumentalist and commissioned as a limited duty officer in 2009.
