U.S. Army Capt. Sam Howell, assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border, finishes a 12-mile ruck march ahead of his peers to complete the final physical requirement during Day 10 of Air Assault training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, April 30, 2026. Howell was the first candidate to cross the finish line, completing the grueling course in 1 hour, 55 minutes, demonstrating the exceptional physical endurance required for air assault operations. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
