Federal and state aerial wildland fire fighting agencies gather for a morning briefing in preparation for the U.S. Forest Service’s annual Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) certification and training event at the McClellan Air Tanker Base, Sacramento, California, April 20, 2026. Department of War (DOW) personnel go through rigorous certification prior to participating in this aerial wildland fire mission, executing a whole-of-government response by collaborating with our interagency partners with the USDA Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE). U.S. Northern Command’s Air Component Command, is the DoW’s operational lead for the aerial wildland firefighting military efforts.
