Maryland Army National Guard soldiers gather for a briefing before beginning the Norwegian Foot March at the North Central Railroad Trail in Monkton, Maryland, April 18, 2026. The Norwegian Foot March is an 18.6-mile ruck march with a 25-pound backpack. The foot march began in 1915, as a Norwegian endurance test to prepare soldiers for World War One field conditions. Participants can earn a foreign service badge by completing the ruck within a specified time limit, typically four and a half hours for men and five hours for women (ages 18 - 49).
