Maryland Army National Guard soldiers rest after completing the Norwegian Foot March at the North Central Railroad Trail in Monkton, Maryland, April 18, 2026. The Norwegian Foot March is an 18.6-mile ruck march with a 25-pound backpack. The foot march began in 1915, as a Norwegian endurance test to prepare soldiers for World War One field conditions. Participants can earn a foreign service badge by completing the ruck within a specified time limit, typically four and a half hours for men and five hours for women (ages 18 - 49).
