SAN DIEGO (April 14, 2026) – Rear Adm. T.J. Zerr, commander, Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC), gives a speech to Sailor of the Year (SOY) finalists at the San Diego Zoo during the SOY breakfast, April 14. Sailor of the Year is a time-honored tradition introduced in 1972 by Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Elmo Zumwalt and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy John Whittet. This annual competition is held to recognize the superior performance of individual Sailors who best exemplify the ideals of professional Sailors throughout the fleet.
