The Gulf American Land Corp developed Golden Gate Estates. They stripped the land of cypress domes, wet pine flats, and wet prairies, sectioning the land into acre plots with canals and roads. To restore this land, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and its partners removed 260 miles of roads and plugged 48 miles of canals. The project has successfully restored the natural flow of water to the region, revitalizing wetlands and improving overall water quality.

The Picayune Strand Restoration Project, a key milestone in Florida’s environmental recovery efforts, has been completed. This marks a significant achievement in the broader Everglades restoration initiative. Spanning 55,000 acres between Alligator Alley and Tamiami Trail in southwestern Florida, this restoration project is the result of years of collaboration among USACE, the South Florida Water Management District, and a variety of local, state, and federal partners.
