Michael Duever, an ecologist and consultant for the South Florida Water Management District, helped lead the Picayune Strand Restoration Project, a key initiative under the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP). The project focuses on reversing the negative effects of development in the Everglades, where construction of canals and roads had created a disjointed landscape and disrupted natural water flow. Duever worked to remove these barriers and develop wildlife and hydrologic corridors. These efforts improved connectivity within the environment, resulting in a healthier ecosystem for both people and wildlife. (U.S. Army Photographer Brigida I. Sanchez)
