U.S. Air Force Col. Josh Rasmussen, AFRL Integrated Capabilities Directorate military deputy, and Dr. Richard Vaia, AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate chief scientist, participate in a panel discussion titled “How AFRL is Organizing to Disrupt the Valley of Death” at Capital Factory House during South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, March 12, 2026. Panelists discussed how AFRL is organizing to accelerate technology transition and bridge the “valley of death” between research and operational capability, highlighting integrated planning teams, innovation pipeline initiatives across the acquisition enterprise, the AFWERX and SpaceWERX cohort model for advancing promising commercial and dual-use technologies, and the use of Tech Maneuver to operationalize innovation efforts. AFRL is the Department of the Air Force’s primary scientific research and development center for developing and integrating affordable warfighting technologies for air, space and cyberspace forces.
