Lt. Col. Todd Mainwaring, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Charleston District, meets with City of North Myrtle Beach Mayor J.O. Baldwin and local stakeholders during a site visit of the Grand Strand Renourishment project in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Jan. 22, 2026. In December 2024, the Charleston District awarded a contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company to place approximately two million cubic yards of sand—equivalent to 200,000 dump trucks—along 26 miles of Myrtle Beach. Construction began on the northern end of North Myrtle Beach in December 2025. The $72 million project is fully funded by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is designed to reduce the risk to life and protect critical infrastructure behind the dunes along the Grand Strand. The renourishment has performed as designed during recent storms, including Hurricane Ian in September 2022 and Hurricane Debby in August 2024, reducing erosion and storm-related damages.
