Operational Medical Systems - Warfighter Protection and Acute Care

A component of a prototype Freeze-Dried Plasma transfusion kit sits on display, Fort Detrick, Md., Jan. 21, 2026. Blood replacement therapies are a top-tier priority for the Joint Services and U.S. Combatant Commands. FDP, managed by the Defense Health Agency’s Operational Medical Systems Program Management Office, is a shelf-stable plasma designed for use in far-forward environments, potentially saving lives during future conflicts by enabling quicker access to this vital resource while simultaneously easing the logistical burden of transporting traditional blood products. OPMED’s Warfighter Protection and Acute Care Project Management team, in partnership with stakeholders across the Department of War and development industry, have worked to increase commercial availability of FDP during the past several years to fill critical capability gaps for frontline medical providers as they prepare for future conflicts in remote, austere environments like the Indo-Pacific and Arctic regions of the globe. As part of DHA, OPMED partners with stakeholders across the Joint Force to develop, acquire, and field medical devices, treatments, and frontline care solutions for military medical providers to fill capability gaps with the speed of relevance.
