A worker with Ventura, California-based general contractor C.D. Lyon Inc. stands aboard a pontoon boat affixed with scaffolding as he paints the hull of the Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS) on Nov. 7 at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division. The repainting is slated to be completed in January. The last time the SDTS hull was completely painted was in 2012, when the vessel underwent a dry-docking restricted availability at a shipyard in Portland, Oregon. During a pierside selected restricted availability that took place in San Diego from April 2024 to June 2025, painters tackled the top portion of the SDTS, including the bow, forward superstructure and aft superstructure.
