GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Jan. 8, 2026) A U.S. Navy recruit waits on the pier after completing Battle Stations aboard USS Trayer (BST-21) at Recruit Training Command (RTC). Battle Stations is the U.S. Navy’s crucible event, which recruits must pass prior to graduation, testing their knowledge and skills in basic seamanship, damage control, firefighting, and emergency response procedures. RTC conducts approximately nine weeks of training for all U.S. Navy enlistees, marking the beginning of their naval careers. More than 40,000 recruits train annually at the Navy’s only boot camp.
